Kidnappers Washed Our Clothes When we Started Smelling - Freed Oyo Teacher

A teacher abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Zachery Olatunde, has dismissed online claims that the recent school kidnappings were staged, recounting harrowing details of his 56-day captivity in the Old Oyo National Park.

Speaking in a video shared by Oyo Matters, Olatunde explained that the abductors occasionally washed the captives’ clothes when their bodies began to smell, a detail critics misinterpreted as evidence of staging.

“The abductors are the ones that wash the clothes for us a few times while we were in captivity, when they notice that we are already smelling. Don’t they see how rough and dirty we the teachers were? Didn’t they see how rough our beards were, like that of a bush rat?” he said.

He stressed that the ordeal was real, pointing to the deaths of two victims including a teacher who was beheaded as proof.

“Those saying the kidnapping was staged don’t know what they are saying. If it was staged, would they have killed two people?”

The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men stormed three schools in Oriire, seizing 46 pupils and teachers.

The captives were freed on July 10 after a coordinated operation involving the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun, and local vigilantes.

The Presidency confirmed that no ransom was paid.Olatunde urged Nigerians to stop spreading false claims, insisting: “It was not staged. It was real. So please stop saying those types of things.”
