Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany coach after the national team’s 2026 World Cup exit at the round of 32 stage.
The 38-year-old coach leaves the post after almost three
years in the role, and despite a defiant stance to continue after Germany were
sent packing from North America by Paraguay, who shocked the 2014 World Cup
champions 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 scoreline. The defeat is the third
consecutive World Cup tournament that Die Mannschaft has failed to reach the
round of 16.
Germany had shown early intent with a 7-1 win over Curacao
but was ultimately denied further progress into the latter rounds, and
Nagelsmann thinks the disappointment requires a fresh start.
“My top priority has always been the
team’s success. After such a bitter
disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start,” the coach said.
“A special thank you also goes to the fans. You carried us,
you trusted us, you gave us energy, even during difficult times. It truly pains
me that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more memorable nights of
football at this World Cup.”
The German Football Federation
(DFB), in its statement, also thanked the former Bayern Munich manager for his
service since he took over the reins in 2023.
“The German Football Association expressly thanks Julian Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023,” the statement reads.
“He is characterised by a high level of commitment and
extraordinary ambition. Julian Nagelsmann is also an extremely responsible and
sincere person whom we all value.”
Nagelsmann led Germany to the quarter-finals at Euro 2024
and has a 23-win, eight-loss record in 37 matches with the national team.
Jurgen Klopp is expected to take over the reins of the team after reports
surfaced of his interest in coaching in his homeland.
