The Kogi State Government has disclosed how security forces successfully rescued four abducted persons, including NECO candidates and their school principal hours after gunmen kidnapped them during examinations in Dekina Local Government Area.
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, revealed the details on Channels Television’s Morning Show on Friday, July 17, 2026.
He said Governor Usman Ododo promptly launched a massive manhunt upon receiving news of the abduction.
“The governor immediately summoned the State Security Adviser and directed him to coordinate the rescue efforts,” Fanwo stated.
Within hours, a joint team comprising the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Civil Defence, vigilantes, and local hunters saturated the area.
Authorities deployed technology to track the kidnappers’ movements and blocked all known exit routes while cutting off their logistics supply. The intense pressure from the hot pursuit forced the abductors to abandon their victims.
“Due to the heavy presence of security operatives and the pursuit, they had no choice but to quickly release the victims,” the commissioner explained. Security forces continued pursuing the kidnappers after the rescue.
The operation followed an attack on Government Secondary School, Olowa, in Dekina LGA, where armed men abducted the principal, a NECO official, and students sitting for the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) exams. One victim was rescued earlier, with efforts intensified for the others.
The Kogi State Government had earlier announced the successful rescue of the four individuals on Thursday.
Fanwo commended the coordinated response and stressed the government’s commitment to the safety of residents and students, particularly during critical academic activities. No further details were provided on the current status or fate of the kidnappers.
