The family of Michael Oyedokun, the schoolteacher who was beheaded by bandits while in captivity, has reacted to the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.
Oyedokun was one of the teachers abducted by terrorists from
Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, in the Oriire LGA of Oyo state in May.
The victims regained their freedom on Friday after spending
56 days in captivity, following a coordinated operation involving the military,
the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police.
Reacting to the rescue, an Instagram user identified as
Oluwabukolami expressed happiness over the children’s return.
Oluwabukolami, who described Oyedokun as her uncle, said the
family remained heartbroken over his death.
She lamented that despite the joy of seeing the children
return from captivity, “my uncle is never coming home”.
“They are finally home. My heart rejoices with every family
that has been reunited with their loved ones after weeks of pain, fear, and
uncertainty. Welcome home,” she wrote.
“But as others celebrate, my family mourns.
“My uncle, Mr Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, will never come
home.
“He was taken from us, and his life was brutally cut short.
Our joy is incomplete because one chair at our table will remain empty forever.
“Today, we celebrate those who returned, while remembering
the one who never did. Rest in peace, Uncle Michael. You will never be
forgotten.”
On May 15, gunmen attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary
School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and LA Primary School in
Ogbomoso, all in Oriire LGA.
The incident prompted the Oyo state government to shut
schools in four LGAs as security agencies intensified rescue efforts.
Protests were organised in some parts of the country to
demand the rescue of the abducted schoolchildren.
On May 18, Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo state, said one of
the teachers abducted during the attack was killed in captivity.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu has welcomed the rescue,
commending the military, the DSS and the police for their efforts in securing
the victims’ release.
The president said the operation ended more than 50 days of
uncertainty for the victims and their families and praised the security
agencies for rescuing them without collateral damage.
Tinubu also commended the Oyo state government for working
closely with the federal government throughout the rescue operation and
directed emergency agencies to collaborate with the state government in
providing medical care and other relief support for the rescued pupils and
teachers.
He vowed that his administration would ensure justice for the victims and for the family of Oyedokun, who was killed during the abduction.
On his part, Makinde said he is overjoyed following the
rescue of pupils and teachers.
