The Organising Secretary of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has been killed by unidentified gunmen in Lagos.
Ajiboye was attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.
Reports indicate that his vehicle was intercepted along the Ikorodu Road axis, where the assailants opened fire, riddling the car with bullets. Images and videos shared on social media showed his white vehicle with multiple bullet holes across the windscreen and body.
Although initial accounts suggested Ajiboye and other occupants survived with gunshot wounds, subsequent reports confirmed that the union official later died from his injuries.
Reacting to the tragedy, Lagos NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, widely known as Sego, expressed deep grief over the loss. In a tribute posted on Facebook, he described Ajiboye as a loyal ally, trusted friend, and a pillar of the union’s political structure.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable, and committed ally,” Sego wrote.
He added that Ajiboye’s unwavering support and dedication to the union would remain unforgettable.Sego extended condolences to Ajiboye’s family, friends, and the wider NURTW community, praying for strength to bear the painful loss.
The incident has sparked concern among union members and residents, with calls for authorities to intensify efforts to curb rising violence and insecurity in Lagos.
