Gunmen have abducted a secondary school principal, one NECO ad hoc staff member, and four students during an attack on Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, around 5:25 p.m., while students were sitting for the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination.Confirming the abduction, the Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Salisu Oyiza, said a joint team of police and other security agencies immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation.
“During the incident, four students, the school principal and one NECO ad hoc staff member were abducted by the attackers,” the statement read.“One of the abducted students has been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to secure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators.”
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, the Brigade Commander, and the State Security Adviser to the Kogi State Governor were heading to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.
This latest incident adds to security concerns in the area. Earlier, the Command had confirmed the abduction of a corpse being transported from Lokoja to Benue State for burial. The corpse of a Federal Road Safety Corps official was later recovered, along with the vehicle and casket.
