Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has attributed the elevation of Senator Oluremi Tinubu to Nigeria’s First Lady to divine reward for her exceptional punctuality and dedication while serving in the Senate.
Speaking on Tuesday during plenary, Barau supported a proposal for recording senators’ attendance at the end of each sitting to recognise those who stay until adjournment. He emphasised that commitment to legislative duties brings rewards not only from colleagues and Senate leadership but also from God.
“Let me even say one thing, apart from being compensated by colleagues or by the leadership, God also compensates you, rewards you for what you are doing,” Barau said.
He cited the example of the current First Lady: “The current first lady, she used to be the number one person, first person that always came to this senate. When she was in the Senate, the most punctual, very punctual and she would stay throughout the session.
"She would come here before any other person. So, you see, God has rewarded her with the position of first lady.”Barau urged lawmakers to take their responsibilities seriously, noting that they were elected to serve the Nigerian people. The proposal for end-of-sitting attendance was moved by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central).
Supporting it, Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno recalled receiving a punctuality award in the House of Representatives, which he said helped his rise to his current position.Oluremi Tinubu represented Lagos Central Senatorial District for 12 years (2011–2023) before her husband, Bola Tinubu, won the 2023 presidential election.
This light-hearted yet pointed remark highlights ongoing efforts in the Senate to promote discipline and full participation in proceedings.
