The Federal Government has confirmed that the last evacuation flight bringing Nigerians home from South Africa will land in Lagos on Wednesday, marking the conclusion of the repatriation programme launched in response to recent xenophobic attacks.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Air Peace flight is scheduled to depart Johannesburg at 1:30 a.m. with 315 passengers and arrive at Murtala Mohammed International Airport around 6:30 a.m.
This flight will be the fifth organised by the government and the seventh overall since the exercise began on June 11. So far, 1,141 Nigerians have been repatriated, with the most recent flight on July 9 carrying 282 returnees.
Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu urged Nigerians still in South Africa who wish to return to take advantage of the programme.
Her appeal came after reports confirmed two more Nigerian deaths, raising the official toll from the violence to four, though some returnees believe the number is higher.
The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every registered citizen who expressed interest in returning will be accommodated.
