The Federal Government has launched a new mobile learning initiative in partnership with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan-African University (PAU) to boost the professional development of teachers, with a strong focus on female educators.
The programme was unveiled on Monday, July 20, 2026, with the start of a three-day Master Training Programme in Abuja. It aims to equip teachers and school leaders with innovative mobile learning tools to enhance education quality across Nigeria and four other African countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, and South Sudan.
Funded by the Government of Japan, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to provide continuous professional development through flexible, technology-driven approaches. The training, themed “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative,” runs from July 21 to 23, 2026.
According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, signed by Director of Press and Public Relations Boriowo Folasade, the programme addresses key barriers to teacher training such as poor infrastructure, geographical challenges, and time constraints. It leverages low-data, offline-friendly mobile technology, allowing educators to access quality resources anytime and anywhere.
The ministry highlighted that the project will particularly benefit female teachers and school leaders, promoting inclusive and resilient education systems through digital innovation.
This move aligns with Nigeria’s ongoing push for digital education reforms and stronger collaboration with international partners to improve teacher quality and learning outcomes nationwide.
