FCT Getting Better Under Wike – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has declared that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, is witnessing significant improvement under the leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike, 50 years after its creation.

Tinubu made the remark on Friday night in Abuja during a special thanksgiving dinner organised to celebrate the successful inauguration of 31 projects across the FCT within 28 days.

Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the President commended Wike and his team for their dedication in transforming the nation’s capital.

“Fifty years after Nigeria created the FCT, things have changed, things have turned around and things are getting better,” Tinubu said.

He praised the minister for showing that “leadership is not measured by how loudly one announces plans, but how clearly the people can see the results of the plans.”

The President described the FCT as a city that belongs to all Nigerians, a symbol of unity, diversity, and hope. He noted that every new road, bridge, and project connects communities, fosters friendship, and opens opportunities.

“Every completed project quietly tells Nigerians that the government can still work when vision meets determination,” he added.

Former FCT Minister and current Special Adviser to the President on General Duties, Aliyu Modibbo, who represented Vice President Kashim Shettima, described Wike as one of the best-performing FCT ministers.

He expressed hope that Wike would continue in the role in a second term, noting that four years was not enough to complete the ongoing projects.

In his remarks, Minister Wike said he met a demoralised civil service when he assumed office in August 2023.

He credited the establishment of the FCT Civil Service Commission  approved by President Tinubu  with motivating workers and enabling them to rise to top positions.

Wike highlighted the impact of removing the FCT from the Treasury Single Account, which allowed access to commercial bank funding for projects.

He noted a steady increase in project inaugurations: nine in the first year, 19 in the second, and 31 in the third year.

“Comparatively, what Tinubu has done and will continue to do in the FCT is unprecedented,” the minister said, adding that most completed projects were previously abandoned.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, represented by House Majority Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, described Wike as the best-performing FCT minister so far and commended the monumental transformation of Abuja.

Managing Director of Julius Berger, Dr Peer Lubasch, speaking on behalf of contractors, praised both Tinubu and Wike for their commitment to infrastructure development.
