Family Appeals to FG, Oyo Govt to Recover Remains of Slain Oyo Teacher

The family of Deacon John Olaleye, one of two teachers killed by terrorists during the May 15, 2026 abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, has appealed to the Federal Government and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to help recover his remains for a dignified burial.

Olaleye’s elder brother and widow made the emotional plea days after the rescue of 39 pupils and five surviving teachers who had spent 56 days in captivity.

Terrorists attacked three schools in the area, killing one teacher on the spot and abducting seven others along with 39 pupils.

One abducted teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was later beheaded, with the act publicised in a viral video. Authorities later confirmed that Olaleye was also killed in captivity, bringing the death toll among the teachers to two.

The family said they only learned of Olaleye’s death through the state government’s announcement of the successful rescue operation.

In a video statement, his elder brother appealed to the authorities:“We are appealing to the government… if they can release his remains, even if it is just his bones, so we can see them, for the sake of the children’s future.”

He also sought support for the widow and the couple’s three children, requesting job opportunities for the wife and educational scholarships for the kids.

In a separate appeal, Olaleye’s widow expressed heartbreak over her husband’s death and pleaded:

“My plea to the government is that they should please, in the name of God, release my husband’s corpse to me.”She echoed the call for assistance with her children’s education and general support for the family, noting that she is now solely responsible for their upkeep.

The rescued victims, including the principal of Community High School, Oriire, Mrs Rachael Alamu, received medical treatment and psychosocial support before reuniting with their families.

The principal had earlier revealed that the terrorists deliberately killed the two teachers to pressure the government into meeting their demands.

The Senate has approved a N50 million donation to families of those who died in the incident, including the two teachers and three soldiers, with each bereaved family slated to receive N10 million.

However, Olaleye’s widow said she had not yet been informed of the support. The family’s appeals highlight the ongoing trauma and the need for closure more than two months after the abduction.
