Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has awarded Great Chinedu Okediachi, a student of Madonna International School, Asaba, ₦20 million for winning the 2026 World Spelling Bee Championship (Middle School Category) held in Shanghai, China.
At a reception in Government House, Asaba, the governor received the championship trophy and praised the young champion’s achievement as proof of Delta’s growing influence in global academic competitions.
He emphasized that the victory reflects the state’s sustained investment in education.“We don’t play with education in Delta State because it is the greatest legacy anyone can give to a child.
Wealth can disappear, but education remains with you throughout your lifetime,” Oborevwori said.The governor also pledged support for Madonna International School, acknowledging its role in nurturing the champion.
He recalled that Delta students were part of Nigeria’s winning team at the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar last year, noting that Okediachi’s triumph further cements the state’s reputation for academic excellence.
Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, described the win as a landmark achievement for Delta, Nigeria, and Africa, stressing that the trophy’s return to the continent was a source of pride.
Okediachi, in his remarks, thanked the governor for the recognition and promised to continue striving for excellence.
His victory has also earned him a full university scholarship from the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN).
