Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has paid glowing tributes to late former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying his integrity, compassion, humility and patriotism defined his decades of public service.
Speaking in Abuja at an event marking the first anniversary of Buhari’s passing, Mohammed described the late president as a rare leader whose greatest legacy was not the numerous high offices he held but the values he embodied.
“President Buhari’s life was defined not merely by the many positions he occupied but by the values he represented.
Beyond his impressive military and political credentials were the qualities that truly distinguished him: his unwavering patriotism, unquestionable integrity, disarming humility, honesty and, above all, his profound humanity,” Mohammed said.
The former minister, who served as spokesman for the Buhari administration for nearly eight years, highlighted the late president’s deep trust in his subordinates, his personal example of leadership, and genuine concern for the welfare of those who worked under him.
Mohammed recounted several instances that demonstrated Buhari’s confidence in him, including the swift approval of a high-risk media tour to Boko Haram-liberated communities in Borno State in 2015 and his handling of petitions filed against him.
He also recalled Buhari’s public defence of his performance during a Federal Executive Council meeting.
Describing Buhari as a committed nationalist, Mohammed quoted the former president’s 1984 declaration:
“This generation of Nigerians, and indeed future generations, have no other country than Nigeria. We shall remain here and salvage it together.” He said Buhari remained faithful to this belief throughout his tenure.
Contrary to the public image of a stern military man, Mohammed revealed Buhari’s gentle disposition, humility and sense of humour, sharing light-hearted moments from their interactions, including jokes about his fasting routine.
He concluded by describing Buhari’s enduring legacy as one of integrity, patriotism, humility, compassion and selfless service, praying for the repose of his soul
