Armed men reportedly led by notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji launched coordinated attacks on communities in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Wednesday night, abducting at least 37 residents, killing a 10‑year‑old child, and leaving several others injured.
Security analyst and journalist Bakatsine, who covers conflict in Nigeria’s North‑West, disclosed the incident in a post on X Thursday morning.
According to his account, the assailants first stormed Tarah community, engaging local vigilantes in a fierce gun battle that lasted about an hour before abducting an unspecified number of residents, including women and children. At least 10 of those abducted reportedly managed to escape in the early hours of Thursday.
The attackers then moved to Takatsaba community, also in Sabon Birni LGA, where they abducted 37 people and killed a 10‑year‑old child. Several others sustained injuries during the raid.
Efforts to evacuate the wounded were reportedly delayed amid fears that the road leading to Sabon Birni General Hospital had been rigged with explosives.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attacks at the time of filing this report.
