Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the latest k!llings in Southern Kaduna, describing the massacre in Kauru Local Government Area as a damning verdict on President Bola Tinubu’s handling of insecurity.
In a statement issued Monday, Atiku said the attack, which reportedly claimed scores of lives, was a painful reminder of the federal government’s failure to protect Nigerians. He stressed that no administration could claim progress while citizens continued to be slaughtered in their homes and communities.
“The reported k!lling of scores of innocent Nigerians in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State is heartbreaking and unacceptable. Every life lost is a painful indictment of a government that has repeatedly promised security but continues to preside over an expanding landscape of bloodshed,” Atiku said.
He accused the Tinubu-led government of prioritising publicity over action, pointing to officials’ focus on what he described as an “unverified claim” of commendation from the United States rather than addressing Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
“The people of Southern Kaduna and indeed all Nigerians—do not need letters of praise from foreign capitals. They need security. They need to sleep without fear, travel without anxiety, cultivate their farms in peace and raise their children without the constant threat of terrorists, bandits and other violent criminals,” he added.
Atiku argued that governance should be measured by the safety of citizens, not international endorsements, warning that history would judge governments by their ability to protect human lives.
Calling for urgent reforms, he urged the federal government to overhaul Nigeria’s security architecture, adopt intelligence-driven operations, prosecute perpetrators swiftly, and take proactive measures to prevent recurring attacks.
While condoling with families of the victims, Atiku expressed hope that the k!llings were not politically motivated, urging security agencies to remain vigilant as the 2027 general elections approach.
“History will not remember how many letters of commendation a government claimed to have received. It will remember whether it protected its people when they needed protection the most. Today, the blood of innocent Nigerians speaks far louder than any unverified claim of international praise,” he stressed.
