A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Austin Okai, has declared that the party’s presidential candidate remains the opposition figure most capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Speaking on TVC’s This Morning Show on Thursday, Okai assessed Nigeria’s political climate and argued that worsening economic hardship has created an opening for the opposition. He cited rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and the impact of government reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification as major concerns for Nigerians.
“Many Nigerians are yet to experience the promised benefits and continue to grapple with worsening economic hardship,” Okai said, noting that while the Tinubu administration insists the reforms are necessary for long-term stability, citizens remain unconvinced.
He alleged that opposition parties face intimidation and inconsistencies in the justice system but maintained that public dissatisfaction offers an opportunity to present a credible alternative.
“If opposition leaders succeed in forging a united coalition built on a common vision for national renewal, Atiku Abubakar remains President Tinubu’s strongest challenger in the 2027 presidential race,” he stated.
Okai described the ADC as an emerging opposition platform, suggesting that other figures like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Peter Obi currently lack the same advantage within the evolving coalition.
Commenting on the recent Court of Appeal ruling that nullified the deregistration of ADC and four other parties, he hailed the verdict as a victory for constitutional democracy and called for judicial accountability to restore public confidence.
He urged political leaders to focus on unemployment, insecurity, and economic recovery, stressing that Nigerians are demanding practical solutions rather than rhetoric.
