Andy Burnham is officially the United Kingdom’s prime minister.
Burnham position as prime minister was sealed on Monday
after Keir Starmer, his predecessor, formally left office.
Buckingham Palace confirmed Burnham met with King Charles
who requested him to form a new administration.
In his first speech as prime minister on Downing Street,
Burnham said his appointment as PM is “a moment for reflection and new
resolution”.
“I hear you. We have not been good enough and we need to be
better. We will be,” he said.
The prime minister said under him, Britain has to show “that
we can regain our stability once again and that is our challenge”.
“We will make this moment a circuit-breaker for Britain and
there will be a new political model,”he added.
Burnham said later this year, he will lay out a 10-year plan
for Britain of where he wants the country to be.
On immediate actions, the new PM said he will unveil plans
to give people more “breathing space” on the cost of living and how to pay for
them.
“The care of people will be at the heart of everything I
will do,” he said, adding “I will give this my all”.
Among the first tasks at hand for the new prime minister is
the selection of his new cabinet.
It is uncertain if there will be any overlap with the
outgoing team.
Earlier, Starmer said he was bowing out with “with good
grace” and “a smile”.
Burnham is the country’s fourth prime minister in five
years.
