A 47-year-old teacher, Mrs Dim Ebere, who was wanted by police for allegedly flogging a 12-year-old pupil to death at a school in Adazi-Enu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, has voluntarily surrendered to authorities.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the suspect reported herself at the Neni Police Station in the same local government area.
She had been the subject of an intensive manhunt by the command’s Safe School Protection Squad following the boy’s death from injuries allegedly sustained during the flogging.
In a statement on Saturday, the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the surrender followed sustained operations in collaboration with officers from the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters and continuous engagement with stakeholders and community leaders in Adazi-Ani.
“The suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka, where the ongoing investigation will be concluded,” Ikenga stated.
The police commended the Adazi-Ani community, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders for their cooperation, which contributed to the suspect’s decision to turn herself in. They assured the family of the deceased and the public that justice would be served.
The command urged residents to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and continue providing useful information to support investigations.
