The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has lodged a petition against Justice Lifu Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, following the now-overturned judgment that ordered the deregistration of the party.
ADC’s lawyer, Alex Adum, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show. He was reacting to the Court of Appeal’s decision which voided Justice Lifu’s ruling that had deregistered the ADC, Accord Party, and three others.
Adum described the judgment as “perverse” and a clear case of judicial overreach. He noted that the appellate court emphasized the plaintiffs lacked legal standing, underscoring what he called a failure of judicial discipline and hierarchy.
“The ADC has filed a petition against Justice Lifu. The Court of Appeal judgment on the ADC’s validity is a return to constitutionalism, the rule of law, and multiparty democracy in Nigeria,” Adum said.
He welcomed the appellate court’s pronouncements, stressing that the decision to deregister five political parties was without merit. Adum criticized Justice Lifu for disregarding evidence before him and delivering what he termed an “overreach.”
He further urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to activate disciplinary measures against judges who, in his words, “engage in such judicial misconduct.”
