The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has directed its state chapters nationwide to stop handling legal matters or engaging lawyers without authorisation from the party’s national leadership.
In a notice signed by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party instructed that all court processes served on state chapters must be forwarded immediately to the National Legal Adviser at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
The move comes amid heightened political activity and growing litigation involving parties ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly following the formation of the ADC-led opposition coalition.
“Only the National Legal Adviser of the party is authorised to issue letters of instruction to any legal practitioner to represent, act for, or take steps on behalf of the party in any court, tribunal, arbitration, administrative proceeding or other legal process,” the statement read.
The ADC warned that any officer or chapter that disregards the directive or engages legal practitioners without approval could face disciplinary measures under the party’s constitution.
It further declared that court processes served on state chapters would not be regarded as valid service on the party, except where a court specifically orders substituted service.
Analysts say the directive underscores the party’s effort to centralise control and ensure coordinated legal representation as it prepares for possible court challenges tied to its coalition strategy.
