Account for Money Saved From Fuel Subsidy Removal, APM Tells Tinubu

The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has challenged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to provide Nigerians with a full account of the trillions of naira reportedly saved since the removal of the fuel subsidy in May 2023.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of failing to disclose how the funds have been utilised, despite worsening economic hardship nationwide.

Tinubu had declared “subsidy is gone” during his inauguration, a move that immediately raised petrol prices from below ₦200 per litre to over ₦1,500.

The ripple effect has driven up transport fares, food costs, school fees, medical bills, rents, and electricity tariffs, leaving millions of Nigerians struggling.

APM alleged that over ₦20 trillion accrued from subsidy removal has not been transparently accounted for, with reports of corruption and diversion of funds.

“Despite huge inflows, Nigerians are facing collapsed public facilities, yawning infrastructure deficits, and unprecedented poverty. The APC government must publish a detailed, independently verifiable report of all subsidy savings, expenditures, and measurable outcomes,” the statement read.

The party insisted that reforms should be judged by their impact on citizens’ lives, not government rhetoric. It warned that hunger, unemployment, and collapsing small businesses have turned hardship into a national emergency.

APM concluded by demanding that the Federal Government disclose the exact amount saved, the projects funded, their locations, and the beneficiaries, stressing that accountability is the minimum Nigerians deserve.
