The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has emphasized that the responsibility for credible polls rests with the Nigerian people, not solely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking to journalists after attending the burial of Pa Simon Okorie Abaa, father of NDC senatorial candidate Chief Linus Okorie, in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Obi stressed that citizens’ determination will shape the outcome of the elections.
“It is not about confidence in INEC. Do I still have confidence in the people? Because it is the people that will determine what INEC will do. If the people insist that their votes will count, their votes will count,” he said.
Obi urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s trajectory and consider the future of their children, warning that meaningful change requires sacrifice.
He lamented worsening economic conditions, noting that poverty and hunger have reached alarming levels. “Every day poverty is increasing. Every day hunger is increasing. You don’t even need World Bank reports to know this because you can see it in the villages,” he said, citing reports that about 70 million Nigerians face acute hunger.
On fears of intimidation during the polls, Obi argued that Nigerians are already “harassed by hunger” and must collectively resist further oppression.
He also highlighted his longstanding relationship with Linus Okorie, recalling their collaboration in the Labour Party before joining the NDC.
Paying tribute to Okorie’s late father, Obi prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved family.
