The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has pledged that his administration would never persecute political opponents if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview with DW, the former Anambra State governor said he would promote a viable opposition and engage them in dialogue on national issues.
“The system must work the way it should function. I would never prosecute anybody politically, I would never do anything wrong while in office. I would not go after opponents. I would make sure that we have strong opposition parties that can stand and say no. In times of problems, I would invite them,” Obi stated.
He added that if he were president, he would convene opposition parties and northern stakeholders to jointly address the region’s challenges.
Obi emphasized that his priority would be ensuring that Nigeria’s governance system functions effectively, with inclusivity and collaboration at its core.
This marks one of his strongest assurances yet that his leadership style would encourage political coexistence rather than confrontation.
