Former Jigawa State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) founding member, Sule Lamido, has urged politicians and candidates preparing for the 2027 general elections to run issue-based campaigns and steer clear of personal attacks.
Lamido made the call on Saturday while hosting PDP governorship candidates from Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Yobe states at his hometown in Bamaina, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area.
He emphasised the need to restore a culture of politics centered on ideas and solutions rather than personalities, especially given the serious challenges facing the country.
“We want to redirect and restore the culture of politics in terms of issues, not personality,” Lamido said. “We must know we are all Nigerians. we all love Nigeria. It’s not about what someone did, it’s about what you will give as an individual or political party, what are you going to offer Nigerians?”
The elder statesman identified key national issues that should dominate campaigns, including insecurity, education, the economy, and corruption.
He believes focusing on these areas would lead to a government truly serving the people if the PDP wins power.
Reacting to the advice, PDP governorship candidate for Gombe State and former Minister of Communications, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, praised Lamido for his fatherly role, consistency, and courage in speaking truth to power.
Pantami said the visit was to seek Lamido’s guidance and support as they navigate the political landscape ahead of 2027.
“Nigeria and Nigerians need leaders like Sule Lamido who stand with the masses and possess the courage to speak the truth to anyone, regardless of their position or status,” he added.
