The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abia State has strongly rejected the new outdoor campaign fees introduced by the Abia State Structure for Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSSAA) for the 2027 general elections.
The agency announced hefty charges, setting N200 million for presidential candidates and N150 million for governorship candidates. Senatorial candidates face N150 million, House of Representatives candidates N50 million, and State House of Assembly candidates N20 million.
ADC Abia State Chairman Kalu Kalu, who attended the announcement on Wednesday in Aba alongside the party's House of Assembly candidate for Arochukwu constituency, Francess Ogbonnaya Tabitha, criticised the fees as excessive.
Kalu questioned the rationale behind the charges, arguing that they exceed the campaign expenditure limits stipulated in the Electoral Act. He warned that the "humongous fees" could disadvantage opposition parties and undermine fair play in the 2027 polls.
“Has it not exceeded the election expenses that are provided by the Electoral Act?” Kalu fumed. He urged the agency to drastically reduce the fees to more acceptable and legally compliant levels.
In response, the ABSSAA maintained that the new policy does not discriminate against any political party.
The development has sparked concerns about potential barriers to political participation and equity in the upcoming elections.
