The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a strong warning to those attempting to use the judiciary to undermine democracy, describing a Federal High Court order to deregister the party and others as “playing with fire.”
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC condemned the ruling by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately deregister the ADC, Accord Party, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The party described the judgment as a direct invitation to anarchy, arguing that it contravenes constitutional principles and established judicial processes.
It further claimed the ruling was a calculated attempt by agents of the ruling party to narrow the democratic space.
“You are playing with fire. Those who believe they can manipulate institutions of state to narrow the democratic space must understand that they are playing with forces far greater than partisan interests,” the statement read.
“Make no mistake, this is another act of desperation by the ruling party and the government to hand President Tinubu a second term without contest. This will not work.”
The ADC vowed to resist the move and pursue all legal avenues, including an appeal, to protect multi-party democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has sparked widespread condemnation from several opposition figures and parties.
