'You Embarrassed Nigeria' - Davido, Rarara Clash Over World Cup Protest Jacket

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and Hausa singer Dauda Rarara have traded words after Rarara accused the Afrobeats star of embarrassing Nigeria on the global stage.

The dispute stems from Davido’s performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles on June 10, where he wore a jacket inscribed “Bring Them Home” alongside the names of more than 40 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State on May 15. Some victims were killed in the attack, while others remain in captivity.

Davido’s gesture drew praise from figures such as opposition presidential candidate Peter Obi, who commended him for spotlighting Nigeria’s insecurity crisis.

But Rarara, a musician aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), condemned the act in a Facebook video, calling it “barbaric” and warning that it could damage Nigeria’s image abroad. He accused Davido of politicising the tragedy to benefit his uncle’s Accord Party campaign and likened the move to “exposing one’s mother’s shame to the world.”

Rarara further argued that the abductions were linked to the arrest of terrorist leaders, claiming Davido’s protest undermined sensitive security operations.

Davido responded on X with a mocking “Debidooo,” while Rarara fired back in Hausa: “Kashiga taitayinka” (“come back to your senses”). The Afrobeats star then escalated, writing: “If only you had knowledge, I would have stopped to speak with you. But you know nothing, just a fool.”

The exchange has sparked debate online, with supporters divided between those applauding Davido’s activism and those echoing Rarara’s warning against airing Nigeria’s security challenges on international platforms.
