US, Iran Exchange Fire as Peace Talks Fail

The United States and Iran have fired at each other again, making an already difficult situation worse as attempts to reach a peace agreement have stopped.

Tensions are high in the Middle East. Iran says any final peace deal must also stop Israel’s military actions in Lebanon. Weeks of secret talks between the US and Iran have not produced any real agreement to fully end the fighting, reopen important oil shipping routes, or control Iran’s nuclear programme.

The latest clashes happened as Israel continued its ground attacks in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his forces would push deeper into Lebanon and strike more targets.

The US is supporting Israel’s actions against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. At the same time, America is trying to reach its own deal with Iran to calm the war that started earlier this year.Iranian officials said on Monday that nuclear talks are not moving forward. They insist that Israel must first stop fighting in Lebanon before any bigger agreement can be made.

Iran’s chief negotiator accused the US of breaking the ceasefire by blocking Iranian ports and supporting Israel. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said stopping the war in Lebanon is their main priority.

What the US did

The US military said it carried out strikes on Iranian radar and drone sites in self-defence after Iran shot down an American drone. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards fired back at a US-linked airbase. Kuwait also reported intercepting missiles and drones during the exchange.

Why the talks are stuck

The two sides cannot agree on Iran’s nuclear activities. The US and its allies worry Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons, while Iran says its programme is only for peaceful purposes. The US wants strong guarantees that Iran will never get a nuclear bomb. Iran wants its frozen money released and is rejecting some US demands.

The Lebanon problem

A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was supposed to be in place since mid-April, but both sides keep breaking it. Israel has moved troops into southern Lebanon. The United Nations is holding emergency meetings about the crisis.

This new fighting shows how difficult it is to stop the conflict. Both the US and Iran say they are still open to talks, but they continue to attack each other in limited ways.
