A group of traditional religious adherents in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has carried out spiritual rites and invocations, seeking ancestral and divine intervention for the safe release of over 40 pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area nearly three weeks ago.
The ceremony was led by Dr. Omolara Fashola-MacGregor, wife of the Olu of Orile-Ilawo, Oba (Prof.) Alexander Olusegun MacGregor, along with other traditional worshippers.
They visited sacred sites including the historic Olumo Rock and offered prayers, libations, and supplications at an ancestral shrine.
The mid-May abduction saw gunmen attack three schools, killing an assistant headmaster and taking dozens of pupils and teachers hostage.
The worshippers, dressed in traditional attire, expressed deep concern over the insecurity affecting children and educators.
Dr. Fashola-MacGregor said the spiritual intervention was necessary amid ongoing security challenges.
“The cries of these innocent school children have reached the heavens. We are invoking the spirit of our ancestors and the potent deities of our land... May those who have taken these children find no sleep, no peace, until every single child and teacher is returned unharmed.”
This comes as communities, teachers’ unions, and religious groups across Nigeria continue to demand urgent action for the victims’ safe return.
