President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated the new Abuja division complex of the court of appeal, describing the project as part of efforts to strengthen the judiciary and improve the administration of justice.
Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima,
inaugurated the facility on Monday in Dakibiyu area of Abuja.
The complex comprises two large courtrooms, eight smaller
courtrooms, a library, judges’ chambers, conference halls and administrative
offices.
The president said the judiciary should be provided with
facilities that reflect its constitutional role.
“This is not just a building. This is a statement that under
the Renewed Hope Agenda, the rule of law will have a befitting home,” he said.
Tinubu said the Abuja division of the court of appeal had
operated for years from inadequate facilities, adding that the new complex
would improve access to justice and support judicial efficiency.
He also commended Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal
Capital Territory (FCT), for delivering the project within the stipulated
timeframe.
Earlier, Wike said the project was initiated after concerns
were raised about the condition of the court’s former facility and the welfare
of judicial officers.
“When I informed Mr President of the condition of the court
of appeal, he immediately directed that we should provide a befitting complex
and decent accommodation for judges and justices,” he said.
The FCT minister said the administration is also
constructing residential quarters for judicial officers across various courts
in the capital city.
Monica Dongban-Mensem, president of the court of appeal,
said the new complex would ease longstanding infrastructure challenges faced by
the Abuja division.
She said the court had previously operated with limited
courtroom space despite handling a significant volume of cases, often relying
on facilities provided by other courts.
According to her, the new complex will improve the speed and
quality of justice delivery.
