The Plateau state police command says three security operatives were killed during an attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru.
Alfred Alabo, spokesperson of the command, said the incident
occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.
Reports had indicated that two soldiers and one policeman
died in the attack by unknown gunmen on the institute. However, the command did
not disclose the identities of the victims.
“The Plateau State Police Command, on a very sad note,
wishes to confirm the incident that occurred in the early hours of today, 16th
June 2026, involving security personnel on duty at the National Institute for
Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru,” the statement reads.
“Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives
during the incident.”
The command said security reinforcements had been deployed,
while patrols had been intensified around the area following an order by Bassey
Ewah, the commissioner of police.
The police said investigations had commenced into the
attack, assuring residents that normalcy had returned to the area.
“The situation is under control and normal activities have
resumed,” it stated.
“Investigation is ongoing. The command urges members of the
public to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses.”
‘IT WOULD BE PREMATURE TO SPECULATE’
Meanwhile, in a statement earlier on Tuesday, the institute
described the attack as a “security incident”, declining to give further
details.
“The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies
(NIPSS), Kuru, wishes to inform the public that a security incident occurred in
the vicinity of the Institute in the early hours of today,” the statement by
Osime Samuel, spokesperson of the institute, reads.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through
the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.”
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants,
staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are
continuing as scheduled.”
The institute noted that as investigations are ongoing, it
would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope, or outcome of the
incident.
“The Institute is therefore unable to confirm details
currently circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms,” it
stated.
It added that it is working with relevant authorities and
will provide verified information as soon as it becomes available.
Reports had indicated that two soldiers and one policeman
died in the attack.
However, the institute urged members of the public and the
media to rely on official communications from the institute and relevant
security agencies.
NIPSS Kuru is Nigeria’s premier
policy training institution for senior public officials.
