SERAP Demands Immediate Release of Sowore After Court Remand

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Federal Government to immediately release African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, following his remand at Kuje Correctional Centre.

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Abuja Federal High Court on Monday ordered Sowore’s detention pending the determination of his application for a stay of execution of an earlier order revoking his bail.

The judge also struck out an application seeking his recusal from the case over alleged bias.In a statement signed by Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP urged authorities to withdraw all criminal defamation and cybercrime charges against Sowore, insisting he was being punished for peacefully exercising his fundamental rights.

“We are concerned about the escalating crackdown on the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association and media freedom, and the flagrant disregard for the rule of law by Nigerian authorities,” the group said.

SERAP emphasized that Sowore’s detention undermines democratic principles and called for respect for constitutional freedoms ahead of the 2027 elections.
