SDP Denies Withdrawing from Ekiti Governorship Poll

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has strongly dismissed reports claiming it has withdrawn from Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State, describing the information as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, affirmed that its candidate, Isaac Alade, remains fully in the race and is duly recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Aiyenigba assured voters that the SDP’s name is still on the ballot paper and urged the public to ignore what he called a “fabricated withdrawal notice” being circulated by political jobbers.

“The Ekiti electorate and members of the public are hereby assured by the National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, and the National Working Committee that the SDP is on the ballot, and its candidate, Isaac Alade, the validly nominated candidate who signed the INEC Peace Pact, remains strongly in contention for the election,” he said.

The party accused unnamed individuals of deliberately spreading misinformation to confuse voters on the eve of the poll.

Aiyenigba, however, raised concerns over INEC’s alleged refusal to allow the SDP upload the names of its polling unit agents, despite providing access codes. He warned that this development could undermine the credibility of the election.

“The SDP hereby declares that in an election such as this, where the actions and inactions of the electoral umpire show an unhidden bias, the outcome becomes a nullity,” the statement added.

The party reiterated its commitment to the contest, positioning itself as a credible alternative that can deliver good governance, equitable development, and shared prosperity to the people of Ekiti State.

The governorship election in Ekiti State is scheduled to hold on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
