Rivers Police Arrest Officers Caught Extorting Motorists


The Rivers State Police Command has arrested and detained police officers captured in a viral video allegedly extorting money from motorists in the state.The command’s spokesperson, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, announced the development in a statement issued on Tuesday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju.


According to the statement, the police acted swiftly after a viral video and social media reports accused ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers attached to the Old GRA Police Station of extorting members of the public.


Social media activist Comrade Phils had publicly called out the team, alleging they systematically targeted motorists especially those with tinted windscreens, near the Rivers State Government House and close to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s residence. The officers reportedly ignored valid tinted glass permits, including factory-fitted ones, and demanded bribes starting from ₦100,000.


The Rivers State Police Command described the alleged conduct as inconsistent with the ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.“Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga A. 


Adepoju, has ordered their arrest, detention and immediate investigation into the allegation,” the statement read.CP Adepoju warned that extortion and other unprofessional conduct by police personnel will not be tolerated. He assured the public that the investigation would be thorough, transparent, and impartial, adding that any officer found guilty would face appropriate disciplinary action.


The command thanked members of the public for exposing the incident and encouraged citizens to continue reporting cases of misconduct through official channels.
