The El-Rufai Support Group Association (ERSGA) has engaged Washington-based advocacy firm Vanguard Africa to spearhead an international campaign highlighting what it calls the erosion of rule of law and abuse of due process in Nigeria.
In a statement released Wednesday, ERSGA said Vanguard Africa would coordinate outreach to U.S. administration officials, members of Congress, relevant agencies, pro-democracy institutions, and multilateral stakeholders.
A regulatory filing with the U.S. Department of State confirmed the firm’s mandate to plan and execute these engagements.
The campaign centers on former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, whom the group described as a “reformer and senior statesman with decades of public service.”
El-Rufai has reportedly been detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February, with bail hearings repeatedly delayed.
ERSGA rejected the ICPC’s allegations of abuse of office, financial impropriety, and fraud, citing “alarming procedural irregularities.”
The group warned that El-Rufai’s treatment reflects a broader crisis threatening Nigeria’s democratic institutions, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking for the association, Mohammed Salihu said: “The treatment of Governor El-Rufai is not an isolated incident,.it is a symptom of a deeper crisis threatening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
"We are bringing these concerns to Washington because the international community has both the standing and the responsibility to speak plainly when due process is weaponized for political ends.”
ERSGA urged the U.S. government, international democratic institutions, and civil society groups to closely monitor developments in Nigeria and defend judicial independence and democratic space.
