The Presidency says former SGF Babachir Lawal’s resignation from the ADC is a “stinging rebuke” to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga posted on X Monday that Lawal had handed Atiku and the “captured ADC” a bitter divorce, sharing Lawal’s resignation statement.
Lawal announced on Facebook that he was quitting the party over alleged manipulation of primaries. He claimed results were altered to favour Atiku and his loyalists, and that winners were replaced by Atiku’s supporters.
“I cannot remain in a party operating a rigging machine ahead of 2027,” Lawal said. He accused Atiku and allies of pursuing ethnic and religious interests, and argued Atiku’s candidacy would only strengthen President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The former SGF also criticised northern leaders for backing Atiku despite the region’s economic and security challenges.
