Pope Leo has named two prominent Nigerian Catholic leaders to influential positions within the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, strengthening African representation in the Church’s missionary and governance structures.
Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins of Lagos has been appointed as a member of the Dicastery’s Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches, which oversees missionary activities and the establishment of new local Churches.
Father Wenceslaus C. Madu, C.M.F., Vice-Chancellor of the Claretian University of Nigeria in Nekede, has also been appointed as a consultor to the same Dicastery.
The announcement, reported by Fides News Agency, included appointments of other African leaders:
Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Archbishop of Kinshasa (DR Congo), and Archbishop Andrew Nkea Fuanya of Bamenda (Cameroon) as members, while Archbishop François Sylla of Conakry (Guinea) was named a consultor.
