Police Launch Violent Crime Unit to Combat Kidnapping in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has unveiled a specialised Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to tackle kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes across Abuja and its satellite towns.

Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, said the unit was created under the directive of Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to strengthen operational effectiveness and improve public safety.

Sanusi explained that the VCRU is divided into five operational sectors to guarantee wider coverage, faster response, and better intelligence gathering.

He stressed that officers were carefully selected and rigorously trained for competence, discipline, and resilience.

“You must conduct yourselves with professionalism, restraint, and integrity. No form of misconduct, abuse of authority, or harassment will be tolerated,” Sanusi warned.

The CP urged residents to support the police with timely information, noting that security can only succeed through collaboration between law enforcement and communities.

Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brig. Gen. Adebisi Onasanya, praised the initiative, describing the unit as a “force multiplier” that would make a significant impact on security in the FCT.

He assured continued military support to police operations.During the launch, a commendation award was presented to CSP Mustafa Mohammed, Commander of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, for his gallantry in a recent high-risk operation in Bwari.

Traditional leaders also pledged support. Speaking on behalf of the FCT Council of Chiefs, the Ona of Abaji, Adamu Yunusa, hailed the VCRU as a “bold and timely declaration that violent crime will no longer find a foothold in our communities.”

The initiative follows the Inspector-General’s May 6 announcement of reforms aimed at boosting the Nigeria Police Force’s capacity to respond swiftly to violent crimes nationwide.
