Police Arrest Woman Over False Kidnap Claims in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has arrested Uzebor Emmanuel, popularly known on social media as “Aza Woman,” for allegedly spreading false reports about the kidnapping of students in Benin City.

Emmanuel had claimed that students of Green Park Academy, Aduwawa, were abducted, a story that quickly went viral but was later debunked by police.

The command said the false publication caused unnecessary panic and undermined public confidence in the state’s security system.

In a statement on Sunday, police spokesperson SP Eno Ikoedem confirmed the arrest, noting that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect knowingly circulated misleading posts alleging that six persons were kidnapped in transport buses, with some escaping and others paying ransom.

“These publications generated widespread apprehension, heightened public anxiety, and could undermine public confidence in the security architecture of the state,” the statement read.

Ikoedem warned that spreading false information on matters of public safety is a serious offence with far-reaching consequences.

He added that Emmanuel would be charged to court once investigations are concluded. The command urged residents to verify information from credible sources before sharing and cautioned against using social media for falsehoods that could disrupt public order.
