Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has firmly stated that no critic or outsider will be able to sow discord between him and Peter Obi, his former running mate in the 2023 presidential election.
In a recent interview on Channels TV, Datti responded to criticism regarding his performance in his ward and local government during the 2023 polls. He emphasized his continued respect for Obi, who is now positioning himself as the 2027 presidential candidate under the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
Despite the two men now belonging to different political parties, Datti stressed that their mutual respect remains intact.“Nobody will cause a problem between me and my boss, Peter Obi,” he declared. “We can be in different parties today but I still have respect for him as someone who governed and someone who doesn’t give shishi [bribes]. Peter Obi and I have mutual respect for each other, so nobody will come between us.”
The statement shows the enduring personal and political rapport between the two leaders, even as they pursue separate paths ahead of future elections. Datti had earlier revealed that sympathy for Obi and the political situation in the country influenced his decision to join the 2023 ticket.
