Concerns were raised on Wednesday in Osogbo after the ruling Accord Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) failed to attend a stakeholders’ peace meeting convened by the Osun State Police Command ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
The dialogue, which brought together political parties, electoral officials, and security agencies, was aimed at promoting peaceful conduct before, during, and after the polls.
However, representatives of smaller parties criticized the absence of Accord and APC, warning it could undermine efforts to ensure a violence-free election.
Adewale Adebayo, governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), described the boycott as troubling:“It is scary that the two political parties that have been fingered at one point or another for killing, maiming, and harassing each other’s supporters are not here. They need to be here to agree to the terms of peace.”
Similarly, Prince Adesoji Adeleke, Chairman of the BOOT Party, faulted the absence, saying their participation was crucial to the success of the peace initiative.
Earlier, CP Ibrahim Gotan, Osun State Commissioner of Police, urged political actors to conduct campaigns responsibly and notify security agencies before rallies or gatherings to allow adequate security arrangements.
He also warned against destroying opponents’ campaign materials. The Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Osun State, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, expressed concern over recent violence that had claimed lives, urging parties to embrace issue-based campaigns, reject hate speech, and respect the rule of law.
