Pandemonium in Akwa Ibom Local Council as Thugs Disrupt Plenary, Sack Councillors

Chaos erupted on Thursday at the Legislative Council Complex in Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State when armed thugs invaded the chambers, disrupting a plenary session and forcing councillors to flee for safety.

Several lawmakers sustained injuries in the attack, including Councillor Ekomobong Isaac, who was seen bleeding before being rushed to hospital.

Tragically, reports later confirmed she lost a two-month pregnancy as a result of the assault.Journalists covering the session were also targeted.

Emmanuel Ufon, a reporter, was beaten and had his cameras seized, with attackers allegedly claiming they acted on the instructions of Council Chairman Inibehe Umah.

Council Leader Donald Usoroh condemned the incident, describing it as a deliberate attempt to silence legislators who had requested a transparent account of the council’s monthly income and expenditure.

He stressed that the sitting was not convened to impeach the chairman but to demand accountability over funds allocated for local development.

Usoroh appealed to Governor Umo Eno, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other stakeholders to intervene urgently to prevent a full-blown crisis in Ini LGA.

Speaking after the assault, journalist Ufon decried the attack on the press, warning that violence against reporters undermines democracy and the free flow of information.

Attempts to reach the council chairman for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone lines remained switched off.
