Femi Awogboro, media aide to former Minister of Power and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Adebayo Adelabu (popularly known as Bayo Adelabu), has asserted that no level of criticism, blackmail, or orchestrated attacks can halt his principal’s rising popularity ahead of the 2027 Oyo State governorship election.
In a statement issued in Ibadan on Tuesday, Awogboro described the recent wave of attacks on Adelabu as a familiar political tactic often used against individuals whose influence and public acceptance are growing significantly.
“Those who think they can stop Adelabu through media attacks and sponsored criticisms should learn from history,” he said. “The same tactics were deployed against President Bola Tinubu before the 2023 election. He was abused, insulted, underestimated, and attacked from different directions, yet he emerged victorious because the people saw beyond the propaganda.”
Awogboro argued that the intensity of the attacks only confirms Adelabu’s relevance in Oyo politics. “If Adelabu was not a major factor in the political equation of Oyo, nobody would be investing so much energy attacking him,” he noted. “The louder the attacks become, the more they expose the fears of those who know that Adelabu remains one of the strongest and most formidable political figures in the state today.”
He questioned the sudden surge in criticism, asking why such concerns were not raised earlier. “Why now? Why didn’t these people raise these concerns years ago? As 2027 approaches and the momentum behind Adelabu continues to grow, some individuals suddenly become political activists overnight. Nigerians are wiser than that. Oyo people understand what is happening.”
The aide highlighted Adelabu’s broad support base across different groups. “The youths support him, women believe in his vision, professionals respect his competence, and grassroots party members recognize his commitment to the progress of Oyo State,” he said.
“This level of acceptance cannot be manufactured. It has been built over many years of engagement, sacrifice, and service.”Awogboro pointed to Adelabu’s track record in banking, public service, and as immediate past Minister of Power, describing it as evidence of leadership, innovation, and capacity.
He dismissed suggestions that the attacks could weaken Adelabu’s position within the APC, calling the movement behind him “organic” and people-driven.“Those behind these campaigns are wasting their time,” he added. “Such a movement cannot be destroyed by newspaper headlines or social media propaganda.”
Awogboro urged APC members in the state to remain focused and not be distracted by what he termed deliberate attempts to sow confusion in the party. He predicted that many current critics may eventually align with Adelabu as political realities unfold.
Adelabu formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election on the APC platform in May 2026 in Ibadan, shortly after resigning as Minister of Power. He has previously aspired for the governorship ticket of the party on two occasions.
