The South African Government has raised concerns over the economic and cultural fallout from xenophobic claims circulating across the continent, warning that businesses and artists are already suffering losses.
Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, speaking in an interview with SABC on Sunday, clarified that the recent mass evacuation in the country was directed at illegal immigrants and not motivated by xenophobia.
Kubayi admitted that the backlash has been significant, with South African companies abroad facing challenges and artists seeing their performances cancelled.
“We can’t lie about the backlash… many of our artists perform across the continent, and some are losing income as gigs are cancelled,” she said.
She explained that the government, working through DECO, is engaging with businesses abroad to provide consular and support services. Kubayi stressed the importance of protecting legally resident foreigners while addressing the issue of illegal immigration.
The minister revealed that one South African artist had all her shows cancelled across Africa, underscoring the scale of the impact.
This comes amid wider continental tensions, with South Africa’s national football team captain, Ronwen Williams, recently lamenting the lack of support from fellow African nations following Bafana Bafana’s 2–0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match.
