Osun Teachers Stage Protest, Demand Rescue of Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers

Teachers in Osun State, under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), on Tuesday held a peaceful solidarity protest calling for the immediate rescue of their colleagues and pupils abducted from schools in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area.

The protesters, led by Osun NUT Chairman Babatunde Babalola, marched from Ataoja School of Science in Osogbo through the Osogbo-Gbongan road and ended at the Osun Government Secretariat in Abere.

There, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Muritala Jimoh, received them on behalf of the state government.

Background of the AbductionOn May 15, 2026, armed men attacked three schools in Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA: Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School. Several pupils and teachers were taken captive, sparking widespread outrage across Nigeria.

Protesters’ Demands and MessagesCarrying placards with messages such as “Stop killing custodians of knowledge,” “From Chibok to Oriire, our children are still crying,” and “Set our teachers, pupils & students free from captivity,” the teachers appealed to both state and federal governments to address the nation’s worsening security challenges.

Speaking during the protest, Babalola said: “We are out today in solidarity with our colleagues and students who were abducted in Oriire Local Government, Oyo State. We sympathise with the families of those who were killed among the abducted victims.”

He added: “We are calling on the governments to ensure the safe return of those who are still in captivity. We are also appealing to the federal government to look into the security issues and find a lasting solution to the problem. Without adequate security in our schools, the learning environment would not be conducive.”

Government ResponseIn response, Permanent Secretary Muritala Jimoh assured the protesters that the Osun State Government would spare no effort to protect schools.

He urged teachers to remain security-conscious, report suspicious movements, and cooperate with security agencies.

The protest in Osun forms part of a broader nationwide action by the NUT demanding the safe release of all abducted schoolchildren and teachers.
