Onanuga’s Remarks Further Questions Government Revenue, Budgeting – Mahdi Shehu

Public affairs analyst Mahdi Shehu has raised fresh concerns about Nigeria’s revenue handling and budget implementation following recent comments by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In a post on his X handle, Shehu said Onanuga’s remarks appeared to confirm long-standing fears that some ministries are not receiving their full budgetary allocations. “Finally, the cat has been officially let out of the bag,” he wrote.

Shehu argued that Nigerians should pay close attention to the disclosure, noting it reinforced suspicions of concealed revenue flows and budgetary failures over the past three years.

Budget shortfalls: Shehu questioned how ministers could be using personal funds to run ministries despite annual budget defenses and appropriation laws.

Revenue transparency: He asked what had happened to the country’s “huge revenues, loans and grants,” suggesting that official accounts of government finances remain contradictory.

Conflicting narratives: Shehu highlighted the inconsistency between ministers claiming they were shortchanged and Onanuga’s description of a “Father Christmas” approach to ministry funding.

He warned that more revelations could surface in the future: “A day has come and other days when more cats will be let out of the bag will be coming.”

Onanuga had made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television, where he defended the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms.
