Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to prioritise the rehabilitation of existing roads over initiating new construction projects.
In a post on his X handle on Monday, Obi argued that repairing critical highways would deliver more immediate benefits to Nigerians than starting fresh ventures or dualisation schemes.
“There is a pertinent reason I have consistently advocated that we should refrain from initiating new road construction projects until we have thoroughly rehabilitated and maintained our existing road network,” he wrote.
Obi cited the Asaba–Benin Road as a key example, describing it as a vital artery linking several states in the South-East, South-South, and parts of the North Central to Lagos.
He lamented that large sections of the road are in poor condition, causing persistent traffic congestion and hardship for travellers, businesses, and transport operators.
He noted that the situation on this route reflects the state of many of Nigeria’s major highways and urged greater focus on reconstruction and maintenance.
“Our efforts should be directed towards the reconstruction and maintenance of our current road infrastructure before we announce plans for new road projects. The Nigerian populace requires functional and motorable roads, not merely projects that garner public attention,” Obi added.
He warned against what he described as superficial improvements aimed at political gain at the expense of addressing urgent infrastructure needs.
