Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commended Nigerian music star Davido for drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security challenges during the ongoing World Cup tournament.
Obi made the remarks in a post shared on his Facebook page
on Monday, where he reflected on Nigeria’s absence from the FIFA World Cup and
what he described as the need for stronger leadership to harness the country’s
human potential.
According to him, Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the
tournament is not due to lack of talent but to insufficient structures and
leadership needed to develop sporting and youth potential.
He noted that the presence of Nigerian performers at the
global tournament, as well as Nigerian-born players representing other
countries, underscores the country’s untapped human resources.
Obi stressed the need for deliberate efforts by political
leaders to create an enabling environment that allows young Nigerians to thrive
in sports and other fields.
He also praised Davido for what he described as a
“remarkable gesture” in raising awareness about insecurity in Nigeria on the
global stage.
The singer had appeared in a custom black leather jacket
with the inscription “BRING THEM HOME,” alongside green buttons bearing the
names of schoolchildren reportedly abducted in Oyo State, a move Obi said
helped spotlight the plight of victims of insecurity.
Obi said the act went beyond entertainment, noting that it
helped bring international attention to the situation of the abducted children
and broader security concerns in the country.
He added that while Nigeria continues to face security
challenges, there remains hope for improvement if the right policies and
leadership commitments are put in place.
