Obafemi Hamzat, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos election, has appointed Musiliu Obanikoro, former minister of state for defence, as director-general of his campaign.
Hamzat reportedly announced the appointment at an expanded
meeting of the campaign council held on Wednesday in Lagos.
According to Arise Television, President Bola Tinubu
endorsed the appointment during a recent meeting with state officials of the
party.
The president was said to have backed Obanikoro, describing
him as experienced for the role given his service in various elective and
appointed positions at both state and national levels.
Obanikoro, a former governorship candidate of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, also served as commissioner for home affairs
and culture in 1999 under Tinubu as governor of the state.
He later became senator representing Lagos central in 2003,
serving one term before his appointment as Nigeria’s high commissioner to Ghana
in May 2008.
In 2013, he was appointed minister of state for defence, and
was later redeployed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as junior minister.
In April, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, endorsed
the 2027 governorship aspiration of Hamzat, his deputy, describing him as the
“best man for the job”.
