OAUTHC Resident Doctors Issue Strike Notice Over Unmet Demands

Doctors at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) have formally issued a strike notice, signaling their readiness to join a potential nationwide industrial action by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) due to the Federal Government's failure to address long-standing welfare issues.

In a statement issued after an emergency general meeting, the leadership of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), OAUTHC chapter, expressed frustration over unpaid salary arrears affecting a significant number of their members.

The chapter highlighted that 83 resident doctors are impacted, with 40 owed between 10 and 14 months of salaries and another 40 still awaiting their March 2024 pay.

The doctors cited severe financial, psychological, and professional hardships caused by these delays.

They are demanding the immediate payment of all outstanding arrears, full implementation of agreed allowances, resolution of promotion and entry-level placement issues, reinstatement of disengaged colleagues, and timely conclusion of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) process, among other national demands.

The OAUTHC chapter declared its alignment with the national body's directive, stating that resident doctors will withdraw services from midnight on the scheduled strike date (as previously referenced in national timelines) unless concrete actions and timelines are provided by the government.

They also plan to participate in coordinated peaceful protests.

This development adds to ongoing concerns about disruptions in healthcare services at the teaching hospital if the demands remain unmet.

The association has expressed willingness for dialogue but insists that any engagement must yield tangible results.
